Our Story

Vanderveer Campbell Farm traces its roots back to 1761, when Petrus Vanderveer purchased this land in Belle Mead, New Jersey. For generations, the Vanderveer family lived and worked this soil, passing the farm down through the family line that would eventually become the Campbells. Though the names changed through marriage, the heritage, values, and stewardship of the land have remained the same.

In the early 1900s, the family operated a brick-and-mortar dairy store in Princeton, proudly serving fresh milk and cream to the local community and to Princeton University. Later, the farm was carried forward by Elizabeth and Duncan C. Campbell Sr., whose devotion and hard work kept the land thriving through the 20th century. Born in 1897, Duncan lived to be 106 years old—a living link between the farm’s colonial beginnings and the modern era.

Today, their granddaughter continues that legacy through Dutch Barn Soap Co., honoring centuries of family history with small-batch soaps inspired by the farm’s fields, barns, and natural beauty. Each bar carries a piece of that story—a reflection of the resilience, craftsmanship, and love for the land that have guided our family since 1761.

Our Commitment

We’re committed to sustainability—creating products that honor the land and the legacy of our farm. Whenever possible, we use locally sourced ingredients and eco-friendly practices that respect both people and the planet. We believe in the power of simple, natural things to bring comfort, celebrate life’s moments, and connect us to something genuine and good.

Our Community

Our Vanderveer Campbell 1761 Farm is deeply rooted in the heart of our community. For generations, our family has cared for this land, working to preserve its history while finding new ways to share it. Through Dutch Barn Soap Co., we celebrate that heritage with thoughtfully handcrafted soaps inspired by farm life and the beauty of New Jersey’s countryside. We proudly support local makers, small businesses, and community events whenever we can—and we’re always dreaming up new ways to welcome our neighbors to the farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have some addtional questions. Please review these FAQ's or contact us if you have any more questions.

What is cold-process soap? Do you use lye?

Yes—real soap is made by combining oils/butters with sodium hydroxide (lye). During “saponification,” the lye reacts with the oils and is fully consumed, so no free lye remains in the finished bar.

Are your products cruelty-free and free of parabens/sulfates?

Yes. Our formulas are cruelty-free and made without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. Each product page lists every ingredient clearly.

How long will a bar last, and how can I make it last longer?

Most customers get several weeks per bar, depending on use. Let bars dry between uses, keep them on a well-draining soap dish, and store spares in a cool, dry place—those simple steps make a big difference.

What’s the shelf life of your soap and skincare?

There’s no single “expiration date” for handcrafted soap; longevity depends on the oils used and how it’s stored. Kept cool and dry, bars generally stay at their best for about a year or more.

Are your soaps antibacterial?

You don’t need antibacterial additives for everyday handwashing—plain soap and water remove germs effectively, and antibacterial soaps haven’t been shown to be better.

Do you use essential oils or fragrances? Are they safe for sensitive skin?

We choose gentle, skin-safe scent options and always disclose them on the label. If you have sensitive skin, do a simple patch test before full use and discontinue if irritation occurs.

I have nut allergies / very sensitive skin—what should I check?

Always review the full ingredient list on each product page and patch test first (inside elbow or forearm) for 7–10 days before regular use. If you’re unsure, consult your healthcare provider.

Why do bars look slightly different from batch to batch?

Our soaps are handcrafted in small batches. Natural colorants, essential oils, and swirl patterns can vary—appearance may differ a bit, but the recipe and quality stay consistent.

Do you take wholesale, private-label, or custom orders?

Yes—we’re a manufacturer and do wholesale and white-label. Because cold-process soap cures for about 4–6 weeks for best hardness and mildness, please allow for that lead time when planning.

How are “soap,” “cleanser,” and “lotion” regulated? Are cosmetics FDA-approved?

Products that meet the federal definition of “soap” are regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission; many other personal-care items (like lotions) are cosmetics regulated by FDA. Cosmetics (except color additives) aren’t “FDA-approved” before sale—manufacturers are responsible for safety and proper labeling.
